Rio Grappling Springs/Pretoria

South Africa and Namibia

April 17, 2012

Keeping pace with the growth of BJJ and Grappling in Southern Africa, I will travel soon to the Republics of South Africa and Namibia to teach the local Rio Grappling Clubs. The tour includes Johannesburg, Pretoria, Port Elizabeth, Cape Town and Windhoek. My hosts will soon release details on times of the seminars and classes at their gyms and is worth checking our facebook page to find out the times and places I will teach.

If you live in Gauteng Province, make sure to attend the big seminar on 5th of May where my black belts Wiekus Swart and Bobby Karaggianidis will receive their first degree at Wiekus’new gym. Seminar will have 2 hours of No Gi Grappling and one hour BJJ, gradings and open mat. Graduation is only for RGC members put forward by their instructors, but the seminar is open to everyone with at least 3 months of Grappling experience.

I will teach privates and group classes most days from 24th to 28th at the RGC Tap Out (Wiekus Swart), moving to Randpark Ridge (Bobby Karaggianidis’ B & J MMA gym) where I will coach until the 4th of May.

From 6th of May I will split my time between the gyms in Spring and Pretoria where my students Jurgen Putter and Francois Groenenvald give classes. Then I fly to Porth Elizabeth on the 14th of May to teach at Jan-Hendryk Coetsee’s RGC PE for a week, before going to Cape Town where I will be available from the 22nd to 31st of May at Rico Hattingh’s school and at his friends. From 1st of June I will teach Steven Lochner and his group in Windhoek, Namibia for the first time ever. I will then return to Jo’burg to teach Sergio de Freitas and his students before heading back to Brasil.

To book a private or join the group classes, please contact the hosts or email me @riograpplingsa@yahoo.com to find out more.

RGC Namibia

December 12, 2011

The Rio Grappling Club arrived in South Africa in 2007, initially with clubs in Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth.

Now we have bjj and grappling clubs in Cape Town (Rico Hattingh) and Klerksdorp (Tiaan Swart) as well as in PE (Jan-Hendrik Coetsee) and in 5 different locations in Gauteng Province (Tapout Northcliff – Wiekus Swart; Randpark Ridge – Bobby Karaggianidis; Springs and Pretoria – Jurgen Putter and Francois Groenenwald; Bedfordview – Sergio Freitas). Our students are among the best in bjj and grappling in the country, proven time and again in national and regional comps.

We are proud to announce that our network has expanded into the beautiful country of Namibia, under the responsibility of Steven Lochner. Steven has a huge task ahead of him, developing the sport in Windhoek and the rest of the country, but we are confident that with the help of Rico Hattingh and the other RGC instructors in South Africa, he will not be alone in this mission. We welcome him and his students in our organization and are looking forward to see BJJ and Grappling grow popular in Namibia.

RGC expansion in Italy

September 6, 2011

The Rio Grappling Club welcomes the new affiliated schools in the Tuscan region, Italy. Now you can also train with us in Viareggio and Pistoia. RGC Viareggio is captained by Alberto Remedi under supervision of Bernardo Serrini (RGC Livorno and Italian Head Coach), while RGC Pistoia is leaded by Alberto Tesi, under the eyes of Matteo Calamandrei (RGC Firenze).

We also congratulate the coaches Bernardo Serrini, Matteo Calamandrei, Gianluca Boni and Matteo Menna that were granted black belts in Grappling by the Italian federation FIGMA, responsible for all Grappling tournaments in Italy.

III RGC Summer Camp

April 25, 2011

From 13th to 21st of August, 2011, we will hold our third summer camp, to happen in Italy, close to the city of Ferrara. After two successful camps in the previous years and the great experience of our winter camp last February in Poland, we have put together a program to benefit our students progress in the 8 days of training, providing them an unique opportunity not only to train and spend time together, but we also put the right tools to make them advance technically more than they would in two or three months of regular rainings.

Focused drills, technique and specific sparring are organised in a way that will maximise the progress of beginners and advanced students alike. Half of the available places have been filled already and the success of our camp can be attested by the fact that most of the attendees of the first and second years are coming again.

And besides the great training, the location is just perfect. The hotel between two lakes in the italian countryside is far from the cities and conveniently close enough to the coast for those who want to skip the lakes and head to the beach. Italian classic dishes are served in the meals, making our camp an unofrgettable experience.

Head to our facebook event page to learn more! There you will find more detailed info and link to the hotel Due Laghi.
